I eventually got the map to re-compute without crashing. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem. However, by uninstalling and reinstalling the game, I was able to get all my previously placed content to reappear.

Update: The solution to this problem was to uninstall and reinstall the game. I'm still not sure what the root cause of the problem was, but reinstalling the game caused all the content to reappear.
