For the persons, there are sometimes controls, but as said before we are in Schengen so european citizens can come freely in Switzerland (and swiss citizens can go freely in UE). The only difference (especially on major roads), maybe, with borders between two UE countries is that, between switzerland and UE, you have to drive very slowly through the customs.
But, for the goods, it's not the same. As we are not in the Custom Union, there are limits on what you can import to Switzerland. Here is a document explaining that you must declare what you import/export or even transport through switzerland (second document of the link): https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home/do ... tions.html
So in the important entry points (autobahn one, notably) of Switzerland, there is special lanes or even parking for trucks, to allow customs checks:
Geneva (A1-A40): https://goo.gl/maps/FS2ds1Z3tgpoBqPJ9
Chiasso (A2): https://goo.gl/maps/rfKCuq4Nt9nk2P9Q7
Basel (A3-A35): https://goo.gl/maps/Czk8jVx5P9DjXye86
Simplon (A9): https://goo.gl/maps/dUVu2JCPx2SVQJ9r8 due to the limited place in Gondo, the customs checks are made in Brig
It could be cool, if Switzerland is rebuilt, to integrate this to the gameplay, because i think most trucks have to stop a the border to clear customs.

What CptCaribbean is saying is that ETS2 is a game about driving trucks, not taking ferries. You can easily drive from Rome to Barcelona via France in the game. Yes, the ferry route between Civitavecchia and Barcelona does exist and including it would be realistic, but is it necessary?

If adding ferries, then there would be the option to add Livorno to Barcelona ferry.
Livorno harbour is.. almost finished, mostly would only need a bit of added scenery.
Porto Torres harbour, that has traffic to Barcelona is already ingame.
And will be an active harbour in 1.36.
Taking a ferry or not taking a ferry, that should be an option, now that the ferry bug does not exist anymore.
