No worries, DeusHorizon! I appreciate all your help!

I think there's a few things in the settings I'm not sure I understand, and it doesn't seem like they are covered in the manual. I'll have to look into it further.

Hrmmm... Seems I've either been extremely lucky with the law, or I have some setting configured so that I can go over the speed limit. From some of the posts I've read today, it seems there's a few things I can change to make the sim less forgiving (brake effectiveness, trailer stability, etc).

Ya, maybe my speed indicator is already set to be 10km/h lower... which would explain why the other cars seem to be flying by when I got the speed limit.

I'll check all that out in tonight's session. Thanks guys for the quick and helpful responses!

I'm fairly certain that even in Canada trucks are required to drive slower in most places than cars and smaller trucks. That is certainly the case here in the U.S., and also in most of Europe.

Now, to hopefully clear up any confusion, here are some explanations.

The speed signs posted on the roads are for normal cars and small vans/trucks. At border crossings are larger signs that list the limits for all manner of traffic, but unless you park your rig and "walk outside" you won't be able to read the sign!

On the "GPS" popup display there is a speed limit posted in the lower left corner. In the Options/Display menu, you have a choice of displaying the truck limit or the car limit. I keep mine set to truck speed limit display.

Also in that same part of the UI, you have the option to disable the truck's "governor" so you can exceed the speed limit should you wish to do so. I have the governor disabled, but rarely drive over the posted limit anyway, so it's not a problem for me.

You also have the option in that same part of the UI to have your actual speed display as MPH or KPH. I keep mine set for MPH, even though I can easily do the 'mental math' to convert from KPH to MPH, I see no real point in doing so. Besides which, when I drive in the U.K. I'm not having to reverse translate from MPH to KPH, which is much more difficult to do mentally!

On a final note, once you've driven long enough you'll soon get to know in advance whenever the speed limit is going to change, and can anticipate it more quickly. 8-)

Awesome. Okay, that makes sense. I (generally) use the GPS speed limit display (mostly because it's visually nearby the display of my current speed (top left of GPS), so I can keep my eye on both at the same time. The regular speed display (steering wheel) is a bit hard to read.

I'll have to check what my settings are at. I'd imagine I have it set to compensate for the 10km/h less rule, as I'm usually at or within 10 km/h above the limit (...I try and keep it within 3km/h, but once in a while, I catch myself 10-15km/h over if I haven't been paying attention (or have been visually keeping up with the rest of the traffic).

Soon, I'm going to try and drive manual gears, as I'm sure that will be far more involving and challenging... maybe too much so.

I noticed that the ProMod allows customization of the display colours on the GPS and map. Is there a way to do that in vanilla? I'd love to tone down the yellow 'discovered roads', as I sometimes get distracted by them, and think it's the GPS route advisory!

He is basicly saying (although badly) that speedlimits are different for trucks and cars for obvious reasons. However that 10km/h thing is incorrect and irrelevant.

If you want to check the actual speedlimit differences for cars and trucks then this wiki gives a good but limited overview. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limits_by_country

You can download a custom .def file after choosing your desired color combinations, then use that as a reference template to create your own custom .def file.

Also, buried amongst the mods archived on the official SCS forums http://forum.scssoft.com/viewforum.php?f=3 you can find some neat GPS mods. I use one which allows me to have the popup display in the upper right corner, and I've even modified it further to replace the blue "triangle" with one that features my own "semi" with blue cab and white trailer. I got tired of not knowing which point of the triangle was the front of my truck! :)

TunakTürkiye_RealGPS.scs

This is the "player.dds" file located in the above custom RealGPS:

I also have my Cruise Control set up to keep the speed within 1kph of my setting, and I use it a lot whenever I'm up to the posted limit.

A bit of topic but how exactly you do KPH->MPH conversion that is easy 'mentally'?

To me it's easier doing MPH->KPH since multiplying is generally easier than dividing ;)

Um, it's multiplication in either direction! The tilde symbol in this context (~) means approximately.

For example:
60 kph x 0.6 = ~36 mph
100 kph x 0.6 = ~60 mph
This method is simple because you can shift the decimal and make a simple approximation:
6 x 6 = 36
10 x 6 = 100

The other way around is just a bit more difficult:

36 mph x 1.6 = ~57.6 kph
60 mph x 1.6 = ~96 kph

Both are multiplications, but single digit multiplication is much easier that two digit multiplication!

Ah, but that's the thing, you are using different precision for kph->mph. In truth you should be multiplying by 0.62. And 1.6 is easier for me than that ;)

I usually use the 5 miles = 8 kilometers trick. You just need to "round" to the nearest multiple of that (and if you had proper education at primary school, you should know the tables of 5 and 8 by heart). So, you get tables like this:

5 mph = 8 km/h ~ 10 km/h
10 mph = 16 km/h ~ 15 km/h
15 mph = 24 km/h ~ 25 km/h
20 mph = 32 km/h ~ 30 km/h
25 mph = 40 km/h
30 mph = 48 km/h ~ 50 km/h
35 mph = 56 km/h ~ 60 km/h
40 mph = 64 km/h ~ 60 km/h
45 mph = 72 km/h ~ 70 km/h
50 mph = 80 km/h
55 mph = 88 km/h ~ 90 km/h
60 mph = 96 km/h ~ 100 km/h
65 mph = 104 km/h ~ 100 km/h
70 mph = 112 km/h ~ 110 km/h
75 mph = 120 km/h
80 mph = 128 km/h ~ 130 km/h

When we were in the UK, the sppeed limit also seemed to tied to the gear we needed to use. 10 mph was in the first gear, 20 mph in the second, all that way up to the fifth gear for 50 mph and beyond. Of course, this differs per car, but it is kind of funny to mention ;)

Having been brought up with kilometres and having lived in the UK for nearly 6 years I would say that you only need to memorise the most common speed limits

30mph (city limit) = 50kmh
40mph = ~65kmh
50mph = 80kmh
60mph (rural) = ~100kmh
70mph (motorway) = ~115kmh

USA is a bit trickier because they use lot's of half limits (ending in 5)... 55, 65, 75mph..
