After a few months of garage-grade R&D I am pleased to announce

USBcycle

an Arduino DIY USB game controller using a real bicycle which has been equipped with sensors to provide joystick axes for Brake, Accelerator, and Steering... also announcing

which is just USBcycle customised with appropriate ETS2 features and commands (plus a small mod) ... The result is a virtual bike touring experience, riding the 45,000+ km of ETS2+ProMods. You can get the sense of the project by watching the

YouTube Video Overview

Bottom line: it's working! I have been riding my MTB around ETS2-land for weeks now, have put several thousand km (virtual) on the bike, and it's a blast :-) This is the prototype version of course, and there are several annoying issues I'd like to resolve/improve; but it's the most interesting and fun exercise bike / trainer I've ever ridden :-) whether you're sweating your way over the Pyrenees or rolling along easily on the flatlands, the illusion is reasonably convincing. I get bored after 10 minutes on an exercise bike, but I can easily go EBS-ing for an hour or more every evening. Note to devs: now you know why I'm so appreciative of those scenic, winding, two-lane country roads!

Code is on GitHub

I have been editing all this doco for days and would welcome reader comments: typos, unanswered questions, unclear points, etc. Bring on the questions!

Amazing!
You take ETS2 to another level. Like the level where you become tired while playing it :P :)

Some say, I'm addicted to ETS2. But then I say. No, it's ProMods, it's a way of life.

That's a great idea. That might get me some motivation to do more sports, too. :P

We should open up the Dutch bikebaths for you...

Edit: 5:17 isn't really in Iceland, though... :P

This is just brilliant. When they show game setups at SCS Blog, I don't care a whole lot, normally. But you've brought it to another level, this should be featured there. (Also, I like the music in the video ;))
