Follow the main steps for fixing performance.

On an nVidia GPU the first thing you should do is lower Scaling. It's a poorly named option since it does nothing with what most people consider 'scaling'. It actually sets the internal resolution as a multiplier of the Base resolution.
Last I heard, the defaults set by GeForce Experience are insane, in the realm of 400-800%. At 1080p with 400% scaling, you're running the game at over 4K! Lower it to somewhere around 200%. I use 150%.

Second is to lower shadow quality. This can drastically reduce the number of expensive DrawCall operations.

Also, disable V-Sync. It introduces a ton of artificial input lag.

I hope this is not too much a dead thread back to life, but I hope others find the thread useful. Just installed ProMods for EST2 and LOVE it. That said, arriving in Barcelona was a disaster, dropping to below 20 fps, which led me to this thread.

I tried a surgical approach, dropped scaling from nVidia's optimised 200% to 150%, no help whatsoever. Ditto for shadows from Ultra and High to High and medium. I was not using V-sync to begin with. I considered just staying out of Barcelona, but then went with the brute force approach of using "Simple" settings in the ETS2 graphics menu and choosing Medium as the quality. That boosted my fps into the 50 to 70 range, and with just a couple of button clicks. As I leave Barcelona (or any other trouble spot) I'll just go back to the nVidia optimization, so I can enjoy the wonderful ProMods.
I don't know how much my CPU might contribute to my problems, new MB and CPU are on the to do list...

Be sure that the game is running on either 32 or 64-bit depending on your OS. For me since I'm running 32 bit Windows 7 I get significant frame drops on 64 bit. I'm running this on a 9 year old laptop just fine so you have to tinker with something to fix this.

x64 Bit is recommended for demending Mods(like ProMods), otherwise you will easily run out of Memory. But for a 9 years old Laptop I don't think you get good results, even with low graphics.

We wont do that because your computer cant handle it. Realism is our main priority, and the road network (what you call lanes) is basically the main detail on a driving game, rather than the landscape. So dont expect us to low the quality

Sorry to bump this thread once more but I can run the game on mid-to-high settings at around 20-30 fps, with no AA ofc, which for me is perfectly acceptable. As long as SCS doesn't remove the 32-bit option from the launcher I think I'll be fine! :)
