I noticed that there are three checkpoints on the Russian side of the ride between Kirkenes and Murmansk. So I am curious: are these checkpoints there irl? What purpose do these additional checkpoints in Russia serve?

Security checks. It's to prevent illegal migration and an occasional check of goods.
