From what I've read, the initials MK and MKD will remain in use, so no need to change them.
Although the signs at the border have been changed to say 'North Macedonia'.

The old ones. But if you register a car nowadays it's gonna be NM or NMK.
The ISO code and the currency will remain as MK.

For example in Bulgaria the new registrations after 2007 have the EU flag on the plates, but the old ones with the Bulgarian flag are still in use.
The old codes for Sofia were C, CA and they're still in use, but if you register a car nowadays you'll get the CB code.

Send a picture of an NM or NMK license plate if you see one.

What we use in the game is what is the most realistic expectation based on real life. For this reason for instance Croatian cars in ProMods only have the non-EU plates. Because IRL you see more of them than ones with EU bands.

Indeed, and I doubt everybody will now go to the department of transport to get a new plate ;)
In Poland you can still see:

Or the bottom one (no EU symbol):

Isn't there the possibility to use both codes (NMK and MK)? Because this would be the most realistic way to implement the plates into the game. As Frozen1 said, yes, the new plates will all have the NMK code, but the old ones will probably remain with MK, as Vøytek said (and very well said, it is obvious that the people won't go to the department of transport to get a new plate, unless it will be compulsory... :?: ).
I also found on a North Macedonian news site the fact that the issuance of new license plates (with NMK) started:
