So guys, I'm thinking of getting myself a first car next year, as for circumstances I may or may not reveal, I will probably have some money. Depending on the quantity of money, I would say my maximum budget fluctuates between £1500 and £3000 (€2000-€4100, $2250-$4500).

Now, I've sort of compiled a shortlist of cars which possibly fit my requirements. There are several cars I really would not want to own, for example a Nissan Micra or any other really slow and uninspiringly designed piece of s**t. Here are a few cars I would shortlist as near or at the top of my list, of course depending on budget as you will see. I want some advice from any owners/ experts on which of these are worth considering further, and I'm also open to other suggestions providing they aren't a Micra. I want something with a bit of style, which is cheap to insure and maintain. It therefore has to be petrol. Oh, and my favourite car colours are black and silver.

Car One: VW Polo

Image

Year: '05-'09
Cost: £1500-£2000

I had to start with the favourite car in my school car park, the VW Polo. These things are loved for being incredibly cheap to buy and run, and loved equally by parents for being slow as hell (the 1.2 55hp variant will do 0-60mph in 17.5 seconds).

Personally I've always found the Polo a bit boring in design both inside and out. But, at the end of the day, it is one of the most popular cars for a reason. I would want the 1.2 either 55 or 65hp version, and definitely prefer the post-2005 facelift model.

Car Two: Ford Fiesta

Image

Year: '02-'08
Cost: £1000-£2000

The Fiesta is surprisingly less popular here for people my age, but I like the look of the exterior. However, I don't really like the interior as much. This car is probably the lowest in terms of likability on my shortlist, but it is cheap and simple, and there is a nice 1.4l engine option. I prefer the facelift version from 2006 onwards.

Car Three: Renualt Clio

Image

Year: '06-'12
Cost: £1800-£3000

I used to hate the Clio, but having looked into it it really has grown on me. The exterior styling is decent, and the interior is well sorted, as well as having high-class materials. I know a couple of people who have one (and they are dating each other, in my opinion having the same car as your girlfriend/ boyfriend is just a bit over the top ). The standard 1.2l is not to be sniffed at, but what really sold this car to me is the 1.2 turbocharged 'TCe' spec engine, which puts other engines in this category to shame. The only downside to this is the price and higher insurance costs.

Car Four: Ford Fiesta

Image

Year: '09-'12
Cost: £3000-£3500

This is probably my favourite of all four cars, however it's the most expensive. It's well designed both inside and outside. I like the standard 1.25l engine, as it has just enough power.

I'm not sure in reliability terms for the Ford Fiesta and the Renault Clio, although out of those two, I'd opt for the Ford Fiesta, as it's better to drive.

But I think I'd go with the legendary Golf. It's well priced (especially if the badge of a car matters to you), got a decent interior, it's reliable, it's practical, and if you ignore the sluggish engine (which shouldn't be a huge issue for a young adult to pop to the shops) yet it still handles well and it's still cheap to insure and run. I'm not sure about the residual cost after running it a few years but it can't be that bad, you can still claw up some money back. And I'd totally go for the post-2005 model, as it's actually tracing it's roots to the original (or at least the GTI model does :P )

You can't go wrong with a Golf. ;)

Buy Golf GT older than 1990. They are cheap and good.

When I'm old enough to get a car I would like to get a Japanese car instead of a polluting Volkswagon or a overrated boring Ford Fiesta and also it cant be too new or it will have GPS tracking and computers doing everything for you

My Peugeot is not doing great lately, I've damaged it and now it has to go to back to the dealer for the second time this month.
Don't get a Peugeot if reliability is what you want.

So now I'm also in front of a choice: 2010 Volvo V70 or 2009 Toyota Avensis Wagon?

Volvo eats lot of fuel, so Toyota. I don't like those cars, but if i had to choose, i would take Toyota.
