Win 3.1 was the bomb!
Even better, DR DOS 3.31 (aka: CP/M-86)

The first computer I ever used didn't have an operating system, it didn't even have a keyboard/screen. You had to program it by first compiling your assembler program to machine code on paper, then entering it by setting a switch for each bit and commiting each bite to memory manually. That, unstandably, took forever(*), but it did calculate pi to 125 digits after the comma and that was f'ing amazing for something an amateur had built in 1977.
First real operating system I used was DOS 3.1 on the Apple IIe.
(*): which is why I was drafted in to help.

You two caught the golden days of computers.. I envy you!
But if I too lived in the '70s, I still couldn't enjoyed them because of the communist regime that was governing Romania. Computers back then were only reserved for scientific research in academies etc.

I read this too quickly earlier, so I'll make a delayed response. You should have seen the Microsoft's programmers' ambition for Win95... Windows95, as released, was stunted. Justifiably so, from a commercial perspective, but if, like myself (I was working for a Microsoft subsidiary at the time), you'd seen the alfa's and beta's (dubbed Windows Chicago), you would have been dissappointed at how little of the features made it in to the release. In fact, imo, it's taken until Windows7 to fully realise the vision of that erstwhile development team. I would love to get my hands on one of those "more or less stable builds with no backwards compatibility at all" and build a contemporary "top of the range" computer to show it off on. Aside from the graphical niceties we're now used to, I would postulate most people would be genuinely cross at "just getting Windows95" at the time.MIRFI wrote:3.11 was the first OS I've ever used.. I remember back in '98 when I first saw Windows 95 and it completely blew my mind.
And we envy you for being young and unspoiled, so that evens out.MIRFI wrote:You two caught the golden days of computers.. I envy you!

Actually I enjoyed Millenium.. Don't know why people complain about it. I see Windows Me like a better '98, which rocked in it's days. It never crashed on me (like '98 did quite often), it had some new features.. Indeed, it wasn't built on NT, which is a downside, but prior to 2002-2003, you could live with that. Here in Romania, people and companies used '98 and ME even when XP was out, without any issues.
By the way, I still have ME installed on a IBM 600E machine. (Pentium II 400)

Same for me with Vista... I never understood why people complained about Vista. I never had any problems with it.MIRFI wrote:Actually I enjoyed Millenium.. Don't know why people complain about it.
That's so cool. I've only tried it a while ago on a virtual machineMIRFI wrote: By the way, I still have ME installed on a IBM 600E machine. (Pentium II 400)
