What car you have & what you've driven in the past?

You can talk about anything here (but respect the rules)

Seriously, if your budget will reach, consider a 2nd hand Mercedez A-class, Audi A1, or Honda Jazz. Practicality + bullet proof reliability right there.

Good choice. And the Honda is I think the cheapest to run as well.

There are two choices you have as a student in my mind:

Make a risky buy with a 8-10y old car that should be reliable.

Buy a 4-5y old car with not to many km's but makes you look like a total pussy.

A mate of mine bought a VW polo from 1998. And, although it's a cool car, it is crap :P

I will just wait a couple of years when I nearly got my education finished and search for something around 5-7k euro ;)

I'm excluding most of taxis and buses.
Driven (as passenger):
1st and 2nd gen. Peugeot Partner
2xRed Opel Rekord
Red Opel Ascona (for a short period, both grandfathers and one grandmothers new husband were driving red Opel)
Opel Omega
Suzuki Alto (Cheapest car available, when grandfather bought it after Opel; It didn't have even passenger's airbag)
VAZ-2103
2xFord Sierra
Peugeot 307
90's 1st half Japanese sedan with a suspended floor (owned by car mechanic)
MB A-class
Ford Mustang (only 500m)
BMW 7. series (on loan, when I broke leg)
Chrysler Voyager
Some others, which I don't remember.

I had list of 150 dream cars, I'd like to have, but fortunately for you, it's on my previous broken HDD. That list contained cars such as from 1938 VW Beetle to 2015 Mustang, GAZ-14 to Rolls-Royce and DeLorean to Bugatti Veyron.

Or buy a new car but you'll have to be a bit more generous with the cash.

Well... Now in use:

2012, Volkswagen Golf Variant 1,6 TDI, and 2000, Volvo V70. Believe or not, but that 15 years old Volvo is much better to drive than that VW...
Cars from past:
- VW Bora
- Volvo S40
- VW Passat
- Toyota Corolla AE100
- Toyota Corolla EE90 (consumed more oil than gas  )
- Toyota Carina AT171
- Toyota Carina AT151
- Toyota Corolla KE70

A new car :O

wow that will cost at least 10k here. For a proper car you are easily 15k-30k poorer.

Well, an Aygo for example starts from less than 10k and so does an i10, a Twingo, an IQ and a C1. And if you're talking about a Sandero, that's 7k!

OK, if you forget the Sandero and you don't go mad with the options, I think that a new car for a student will probably cost around 12k - 15k. Plus, it's brand new so there's nothing to go wrong and you can customise it easily!

Well always consider this:

A new car looses alot of it's value as soon as you drive away with it.

As an example: We bought a used Ford S-max. A brand new one costs around 42k. The salesman said that as soon as you get into the car and drive away from the dealer the car will loose 8k-10k of it's value.

That is why we bought an occasion from June 2014 ;)
